What the Civics Test Covers
The U.S. citizenship civics test is given verbally during your naturalization interview. A USCIS officer asks questions from the civics pool and you answer verbally — no writing, no multiple choice.
The civics topics are organized into three categories:
American Government — the three branches, Congress, the President, the Supreme Court, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, rights and responsibilities of citizens
American History — the colonial period, the American Revolution, the Civil War, the world wars, the Cold War, the civil rights movement, and major events in U.S. history
Integrated Civics — U.S. geography, national symbols, holidays, state capitals, and American innovations
These practice tests are created for educational purposes and are not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or connected to USCIS, DHS, or any government agency.

Why does the Constitution separate the government into three branches?
Answer: To prevent one branch from becoming too powerful. Separation of powers helps each branch limit the others through checks and balances.
