US Citizenship Test in Spanish: Rules, Study Tips & Free Practice

3 min read

If you are preparing for the U.S. naturalization civics test and Spanish is your stronger language, there are two separate questions to sort out: what you are allowed to do in the interview itself, and how you should study beforehand. They have different answers.

Can You Take the Citizenship Test in Spanish?

For most applicants, the civics test is given in English, and there is an English reading and writing component as well. However, USCIS provides exemptions and accommodations based on age and length of permanent residence. Applicants who qualify under those rules may be able to take the civics portion in the language of their choice with an interpreter.

The exact age and residency thresholds are set by USCIS and can change, so confirm your own eligibility directly at uscis.gov or with an accredited representative rather than relying on any third-party summary — including this one.

Which Civics Test Applies to You

This matters more than most study guides admit, because USCIS now runs two versions in parallel:

  • Filed Form N-400 before October 20, 2025 — the 2008 test. The officer asks up to 10 questions from a list of 100, and you need 6 correct.
  • Filed on or after October 20, 2025 — the 2025 test. The officer asks 20 questions from a list of 128, and you need 12 correct.

It depends on your filing date, not your interview date. Check the date on your USCIS receipt notice before you study anything, because preparing for 6-out-of-10 when you are facing 20 questions is a serious mistake.

Why Studying in Spanish Still Helps — Even for an English Test

Many applicants who will answer in English still study the material in Spanish first. That is a sound approach. Understanding what the Bill of Rights is, or why there are 100 senators, is a comprehension task. Producing the answer aloud in English is a separate, later skill.

The sequence that works well: learn the concept in your stronger language, then practice saying the answer in English until it is automatic.

Remember the Test Is Spoken

The civics test is oral. A USCIS officer reads each question aloud and you answer aloud. Recognizing the right answer on a screen is not the same skill as producing it under pressure in conversation, so practice speaking your answers out loud rather than only reading them.

The officer stops as soon as you have answered enough questions correctly to pass, so a strong start can end the civics portion early.

The Questions Whose Answers Change

A handful of official questions ask about current officials — the President, the Vice President, your state’s Governor, your U.S. Senators. Those answers change with elections.

Never memorize a name from an old video, printed guide, or study app for these. Confirm the current answer at uscis.gov shortly before your interview.
